Information about the
Southeast Kentucky Sheep Producers Association’s
Second Annual Breeding Sheep Auction
July 27, 2024 – London, Kentucky
Dear Potential Seller and Buyer:
The Southeast Kentucky Sheep Producers Association (SEKSPA) invites you to SELL or BUY high-quality breeding sheep in our Breeding Sheep Auction on Saturday, July 27, 2024. The auction will be held at the Wilderness Trail Area Marketing Alliance at 3610 Slate Lick Church Road, London (Laurel Co), KY 40741. In order to maintain a high-quality standard of breeding stock and make the sale operate smoothly, the following rules will apply:
Sellers Information:
• If you’d like to consign your sheep, please let Patrick Angel know by email, text or phone call by June 7th which is the cutoff date for sellers to be accepted into the sale (606-312-5264 or pangel9491@gmail.com).
• We will be capping the sale at 150 sheep
• The maximum number of sheep allowed per farm will be 10 ewes and 2 rams
• The minimum number of sheep allowed per farm will be 3 ewes and/or 1 ram
• The ewes will be sold in uniform lots, sorted according to sellers
• A seller can have as many as 10 ewes in one pen if all 10 of those sheep match in terms of size
• If the ewes in a pen of 10 do not match, they will be divided into 2 or more pens (with a minimum of 3 ewes per pen)
• Sheep will become the property of the buyer immediately after the sale
• No further sales or trades can be made on-site after the sale closes
• Ewes must be less than 2-years old, can be any breed/cross, and either commercial or registered (for example, the ewes cannot be over 24-months old on the day of the sale)
• Rams must be 2-years old or younger (for example, on the day of the sale, rams can be up to 2-years 11-months old)
• Rams must be registered and not commercial
• For any registered sheep sold, the papers must be presented/transferred to the buyer at the sale
• No minimum weight, but the lambs must have been weaned for at least 4-weeks. A minimum of 90 days old is preferred
• The sheep must be born/raised on the seller’s farm >br>
• The seller must isolate the sheep for a minimum of 30-days before the sale
• If a seller of registered sheep does not have the papers the day of the sale, $100 per head will be withheld until the buyer receives the papers
• No substitution of the consigned sheep after they have been screened, but if a seller must remove screened sheep from the sale because of ill-health reasons, they must notify us before the printing of the Sale Catalogue (by June 28). If notification is received after June 28, there will be a $10 per head charge unless a veterinarian verifies an ill-health reason.
• The cutoff date for sellers to be accepted into the sale is June 1, 2024. Potential sellers should call Guy Taylor (606-875-5383) or Patrick Angel (606-312-5254) to get listed and schedule the pre-screening inspection
• Pre-screening will start after June 1, 2024 and the sellers will bring their sheep to inspection stations located at County Extension Offices or similar locations in Laurel, Pulaski, Wayne, Russell, Perry and Clark Counties on designated dates and times. Saturdays will be the likely days for the prescreening inspections.
• All sheep in the sale will be quality inspected and screened for Body Condition Score, FAMACHA Score, scabies, ringworm, pinkeye, Orf, Caseous Lymphadenitis, hoof condition, udder soundness, testicle soundness, vaccinations, proper identification, Scrapies Farm Tag, etc.
• Special SEKSPA ear tags will be inserted in the sheep that pass inspection. Scrapies tags for the farm of origin are required for each sheep.
• Sellers will be charged
o $5.00 per head ‘Tagging Fee’, paid at the time of the inspection (non-refundable)
o $10.00 commission charge/consignment feed paid on the day of the sale
o $0.50 for every $100 worth of sheep sold for the Kentucky Sheep Check-Off
• Sellers must be SEKSPA members in good standing. Annual dues are $10 per family.
• The sellers will not get a check on the day of the sale. It will be sent to them the next week after the sale.
• Each seller must fill out a Producer Information Form for the Sale Catalog:
o Date of birth if known, weight at birth if known, single/twin/triplet, breed
o Contact information, personal background of producer, description of farm, etc.
o Commercial/registered
• Producers and their sheep will be listed in a color catalogue that will be put on-line, sent to County Extension Offices, and distributed to Farm Stores. Videos of the sheep will be posted on Facebook and Instagram.
• Sale Order will be determined by a raffle number chosen by the seller out of a coffee can
• Sellers may be asked to meet in person (or by zoom/telephone) to discuss logistics of the sale
• Sellers can bring their sheep in the day before the sale if necessary
• Veterinarian Dr. Keaton Smith DVM oversees the screening committee and will conduct a second health inspection on the day of the sale
Buyers Information:
• Potential buyers will be given a bid number and they must present their Driver’s License
• Sheep must be paid for in cash or by check on the day of the sale
• High bidders will get to choose one or all the sheep in a pen
• Sheep purchased at this sale are eligible for cost share under the KY County Agriculture Investment Program
• Health papers will be provided upon request for sheep being transported out of state
• If a buyer purchases 10 head or more, they can request free transportation within a 100-mile radius of London, KY. SEKSPA reserves the right to transport the sheep by the most economical means possible. SEKSPA assumes no liability in transportation.
• For those buyers who purchase fewer than 10 sheep, arrangements can be made with private haulers to haul a buyer’s sheep for a negotiated price
• No sheep will be loaded until the conclusion of the sale
• The Sale and Lamb Lunch are free for SEKSPA members and their families. Lunch for non-members is $10 with membership to SEKSPA optional.
• The buyers will be given an opportunity to become personally acquainted with the seller and vice versa to strengthen the SEKSPA network
• All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. SEKSPA does not assume liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur
